Today, I want to share the practice that first opened that door for me.
When I first left religion, I still yearned for a higher power connection. I knew it existed. But I couldn’t stomach it in religious form at ALL. All of the words, the names for deities (you know the ones) and even prayers or religious songs all triggered me. Sometimes I’d go into instant panic, and sometimes I’d get so pissed that I wanted to throw something.
One day, I said simply said out loud: “I KNOW there is a connection, and I want to find it!” Speaking things out loud has power. More on that later.
What I didn’t realize then was that yes, there is a connection, and it has absolutely nothing to do with religion. It’s a connection that you and I can access at ANY TIME, and its one that religion just doesn’t hold a candle to.
One morning I was sitting on my log cabin porch with coffee in hand, deer wandering by. I was randomly scrolling on my phone and came across a meditation teacher named DavidJi. I was dubious about meditation - remember, I had just left religion with allll the programming still fresh. But his voice…oh my gosh. No one had to tell me he was called “the velvety voice of stillness.” I just felt it. So I decided, what the heck? I’ll try it.
I followed his instructions: feathered my nest, got comfortable, and closed my eyes.
And then immediately I went deep. Those few guided minutes were like listening to the most beautiful music in the world. When it ended, I opened my eyes slowly, moved my arms and legs, and realized I was crying. Gentle tears streamed down my face. His simple method made connecting with Spirit (Source, Higher Power, whatever name you choose) feel simple, loving, and something I desperately wanted to connect to again.
Two things hit me at once:
I had connected to my heart and the ‘flow’ authentically for the very first time.
I never thought I could connect to Spirit outside of religion.
That moment changed me. I stepped into what I now call “the flow”—gently powerful, deeply loving, and a deep well of creativity.
Since then, meditation has become the bookends of my days—morning and evening. And it has become part of my joy practice. That daily, non-negotiable time of stillness and silence sets my pace for the day. And it gives me JOY!
Since then, I’ve written and recorded guided meditations of my own, and every time I do, I return to that same flow of love, connection…LIFE.
